THE SCHOOL

The Perito Moreno Waldorf School:

The school is carried by the association "Asociación Civil Educadora Luz del Sol". It educates nearly 400 children and young people from kindergarten to high school. The school is based on the principles of Waldorf education which were developed by Rudolf Steiner in 1919 to meet the educational needs of the children of our age.

Based on the belief that all teaching has to be seen in a social context, the school considers that education is at root a social question. Personal growth goes hand in hand with the appropriate social development of the community one belongs to.

Rudolf Steiner outlined the concept of the three-fold social order which posits that a community can grow in a healthy way if it respects the following:

- In the cultural sphere, respect for the diversity of beliefs
- In the area of law, equal of opportunity for all
- In economic life, fraternity

The way the Perito Moreno Waldorf school works is based on these concepts.

Because of this, our community consists of families that come from very different social, economic and religious backgrounds. We work on integration, and consider diversity essential in order to form free human beings. From its very beginnings to the present day our school has grown in response to the real needs of the community. Sharing material resources in a fraternal way has always been the basic principle of our growth.

We constantly receive donations: work, time, professional skills, ideas and money. The school does not receive any kind of government subsidy and our socio-educational project is based on self sufficiency. We choose to be self sufficient as this stimulates social participation and group initiatives. The creativity which is thus developed enables our school to continue in spite of the legal and economic instability of our South American society.

Historical overview

The association "Asociación Civil Educadora Luz del Sol", a non-profit organization, was set up in 1987 by teachers, parents and members of the anthroposophical society. In the beginning three teachers, supported by teachers from the waldorf school San Miguel Arcangel, opened a kindergarten for 7 children in response to the needs of a group of parents who wanted a different kind of education for their children.

The kindergarten was first located in a small house in Villa Adelina and moved to a bigger house in Martinez when more space was needed. 1994 saw the need to form a first grade and with a great deal of enthusiasm and hard work a property was bought. Today it houses the kindergarten and the first nine years of school years. To obtain the necessary funds for this property and further build the school, we received donations from various sources, including:

-Loans from associations related to Waldorf education in Germany, Switzerland and Argentina.
- Donations as a result of initiatives by parents and teachers.
- Loans from parents.

Thanks to the parents who have continued to look for new fundraising opportunities year after year, we have been able to build new classrooms, bathrooms, playgrounds etc. and have now completed the basic premises.

The activities they undertook to generate those funds range from making and selling dolls, Waldorf toys and organic food in the school shop, to recycling paper, organizing raffles, concerts, circus performances, clothes fairs, art exhibitions and even selling insurance.

In November 2002 the school needed to buy a new property to house the high school. This has made the Perito Moreno School into an educational establishment which offers the complete range of the compulsory twelve grades of education. This property too was bought with loans from parents the school and the school's Parents Association has promised to pay them off by 2015.
